Hi friends. This is an important topic. I won't go into motivational moments too much with this one... please tune in later tonight for another post. This is difficult topic to cover but so important. Here are a number of resources I expect each of you to look at some of them and be prepared for yourself or others. This is our homework my friends.
If you or someone you know is a danger to themself or others (in the U.S.) please contact a professional right away! Connect them to suicide prevention & 24 hour helplines for crisis! Have local & national places in your phone and bookmarked on your computer under (EMERGENCY #'s & Crisis Care if you want to. ) You can help someone by at least getting them counseling a little faster then many hospitals are able to... you also have access to many other helpful channels and this may save them the fear, degradation, and suffering of public humiliation, pain, and anxiety that those with chronic illness suffer. Chronic Lyme is one of multiple diseases that goes unrecognized, misdiagnosed and misunderstood.
You never know when people will need help that you are not equipped to give!!! Try to get them calm, say supportive things and ask where they are, if they are safe, if they are sober, if they are hurt & contact 24 hour Crisis Center, Emergency Counseling; Suicide Help Line, local Emergency services or their Mental Care Giver/Primary Care Physician if you can get that info from someone.... personally I'd handle any of those better then most of the trips to the E.R . I have suffered since being diagnosed. ER's and Psych Wards do not necessarily "help" as much as catch, calm chemically, hold them and then hand them off to Pschy units. I'ts incredibly frustrating to have this happen because you get released from the hospital but you don't actually get treatment for the root cause of your illness! What is wrong with that picture?
EVERYTHING!!We live with a system that commands before it understands: misunderstanding a disease before mandating treatments protocols or making some meds outlawed etc is common sense. DO NOT EXPECT COMMON SENSE OR GOOD MANNERS WITH PEOPLE WHO FEAR E.R.'S OR THE POLICE! This may be due to past treatment & try to make them voluntarily & actively "getting help" (not a promise.YOU NEED PROOF) & just to be super "civil" & legally reporting it you can contact local 24 emergency help service through local hospitals, urgent care, Rehab, Counseling, or inform their Emergency Contact, local police (not a 911 call if the person is with trained social service, medical care, or emergency room. Tell them the ONLY way to avoid a 911 call by YOU is if they talk IMMEDIATELY to Suicide prevention people, 24 Crisis Center, or voluntarily check in at any one of the listed places for professional & safe counseling AS A SUICIDE RISK.
It sucks but that's way better then spending 24 hrs in an E.R. & then psych ward & then seeing a counselor!!!!
IT'S A NONSENSICAL SYSTEM IN TERMS OF MINIMIZING SUFFERING OR MAXIMIZING the time between now and when they see someone - totally different from reporting someone or something.
And remember if you can get this person to safety, report it legally & respect their feelings or frustrations without passing it off to a dispatchers, fire, police & EMT's which by law respond, Lyme professional who treats them, a legal guardian or speak TO their M.D. or Therapist. So I hope you all share this & spread the love! Please communicate with others and provide GOOD contacts for suicide prevention in the comments section or on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/akorteshares/. I hope you all are being kind to each other & I will have another post with a very different topic tonight! HAVE A HAPPY. HEALTHY AND HEALING DAY FULL OF HOPE!!! Peace, Audrey
