Eating for Peace: Part 4 "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ― Hippocrates

MAY 20, 2014

LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE...

Hippocrates, as well as many others from various early cultures around the world, taught that the quality of health is primarily determined by daily food choices. Along with lifestyle, activities, eating and drinking choices are made every day which create or damage our health, which then affects our destiny.

Health experts now agree that most of us actually eat way too much protein, with several negative consequences including kidney disease and osteoporosis, not to mention a variety of gastrointestinal problem... Our daily protein requirement is actually quite modest and can be easily met by whole grains, beans, and fresh vegetables which means the age old question most vegetarians get asked: "Where do you get your protein?" is really not necessary unless that person eats only processed and packaged starchy foods. This is why vegetarian diets have become less reliant on heavy egg and cheese dishes also - it's simply not necessary!

Like it or not the protein we consume that comes by way of animal foods is excessive even in small portions - and we Americans don't eat small portions anyways do we? Worse still the fat content in meat is downright lethal. Again these are the facts - it's not about the morality of eating animals in this case, it's about your health. Heart disease, cancer of all types, obesity, vascular disease, high cholesterol, diabetes are but a few of the very serious consequences of high protein & high fat diets. Just because you aren't "fat" or overweight doesn't mean that you can afford to ignore the lasting affects of eating high fat & high protein diets. Your heart doesn't care if your 5 foot 10 and weigh 130 pounds if you're eating meat everyday... it will suffer and eventually the effects of these food choices will catch up with you.

The average American consumes nearly half of his or her calories everyday from fat. Say what? HALF their calories each and every day! Yikes. This is primarily from meat, dairy, and eggs. Health experts recommend significantly reducing dietary fat which is where a vegetarian or semi vegetarian diet comes into play. It is a simple and highly effective way to change this. I asked you to cut out the meat one day a week in Eating for Peace Part 2. Then I suggested doing the same with dairy - one day a week get rid of it. I struggled with this a bit but with Almond milk now I am rather enjoying it & will be going to try 2 days a week dairy free. May I suggest if you read those posts and ignored the advice as many of you did I know, that you reconsider it now. One day a week. 52 days a year. You got this.

Go Meat free. You can do this! If you're already on board with this let's up the ante now. In the month of June I want you to go completely meat free 2 days a week. No cheating! And go dairy free 1 day a week. Please try this for 4 weeks. I'm begging you for your health and therefore your happiness. I can help by providing recipes and all kinds of tips if you like. Just message me. It's a lifestyle change - it may be unfamiliar territory but that's what keeps life exciting. But this is something that can and will benefit EVERYONE!!!

And remember especially if you're fighting chronic illness like myself, meat is incredibly inflammatory. It is not doing anything to help you heal and is probably exacerbating your pain and inflammation. I'm not making this stuff up and it took me a dozen years to figure this out and start paying attention to it myself. Now I encourage you to do the same.

Remember you're food decisions affect those around you also - if you have children do you want them to suffer from these conditions when they are older? Do you want them to have high cholesterol, diabetes, coronary disease, gastrointestinal problems or be overweight?

Do you want them to see you hospitalized or highly medicated due to heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, gout etc? These are questions that all adults, of all sizes need to ask themselves! Would you be willing to stop eating meat to spare your children that kind of pain and fear and heartache? I know it tastes good but speaking from experience hospital food does not - are you willing to trade one for the other because you may not have a choice my friends. Having recently spent sometime in an E.R. again I can tell you anything and everything you can do to avoid time there (for any reason) is well worth the effort. WELL WORTH IT! Okay? And food is one of those things you can make good and bad decisions about not just daily, but multiple times a day - which is actually good news when you think about it. It means it's not too late! It's never too late. Nobody is perfect - in fact I prefer to be around admittedly imperfect people then self-righteous and uptight individuals. The key is to start making changes. That's all. Start today! And little by little make better choices. Commit to that much at least and you're suddenly on the right path. It's that easy.

Do it for yourself, for your loved ones, for your future and theirs. It's called preventative medicine and it's something we do a terrible job of teaching people about in this country. But you're smart enough and dedicated enough to start enacting this type of medicine in your life now. I know you are. Or you wouldn't be here with me! So for lack of better motivational words I say "JUST DO IT!".

THANK YOU FOR VISITING BETWEEN HEALTH & WEALTH AVENUES AND I WISH A HAPPY, AND HEALTHY NIGHT MY FRIENDS.
